Não é necessário saber como fazer, mas como não hesitar frente ao desafio, quando é necessário fazer aquilo que é desconhecido e fazê-lo, deixando o “modo” (tanto quanto possível) para a nossa natureza.”

Jerzzy Grotowski

Presentation

The acting studio O Canto do Bode regularly offers the workshop Acting in the Unknown. The next edition will take place on May 23, 2026, and participants will have the opportunity to discover and explore the exercises that the studio has been developing throughout its seven years of continuous research.

What these exercises share is a focus on situations and phenomena that escape the actor’s understanding and control. By privileging the unknown, actors can expand their notion of who they believe they are, what they believe the character is, what the scene is, what the world is, what life is. Such expansion largely arises from the establishment of psychophysical dynamics that intensify action on stage. What is the challenge to be faced? The unknown is also unsettling — it generates fear and hesitation. Even when aware that facing the unknown requires risk-taking, actors, often involuntarily, protect themselves. These resistances can only be minimized through systematic work aimed at revising perceptual habits and automated modes of action (both on stage and in the world).
