O Canto do Bode in RIO

Canto do Bode will be in Rio de Janeiro between March 21st and April 2nd, with a program that will include four performances of the show "Exercício para uma metamorfose" (Exercise for a Metamorphosis), a workshop, and two guided demonstrations of their research on the creative processes of the actress and the actor.
Below is complete information on all activities:

1. Acting in the Unknown
workshop

It is not necessary to know how to do it, but how not to hesitate in the face of a challenge, when it is necessary to do what is unknown and to do it, leaving the "method" (as much as possible) to our nature.” Jerzy Grotowski
"In the world we live in, what we know and what we don't know coexist in a state of perfect confusion, fatally linked like Siamese twins."
Haruki Murakami
About the workshop
The workshop "Acting in the Unknown" will offer participants the opportunity to learn about and experience practices developed by Vitor Lemos and the artists of the O Canto de Bode studio (Lisbon). These practices share a common focus on situations and phenomena that escape the actor's comprehension and control. By privileging the unknown, the actor expands their understanding of what they can do, what they believe the character, the scene, and the world to be, moving scenic creation away from the mere representation of ideas and closer to an acting experience of intensity. What is the problem to be faced? The unknown also causes discomfort, generates fear and hesitation. Even aware that, in the face of the unknown, it is necessary to take risks, the actor, albeit involuntarily, tends to defend themselves. The practices to be experienced allow the participant to become aware of their resistances; to review perceptual habits and automated ways of acting; and to attune themselves to the adventure of difference.

About the show
The performance "Exercise for a Metamorphosis" interprets the transformation of Kafka's protagonist into an insect as a description of existence itself. The experience of life is understood as an encounter with events impossible to anticipate, events that challenge everything we think we know. Such events are quickly classified as absurd and incoherent because they disrupt our expectations of stability and control over the world. A different attitude—like that resulting from Gregor Samsa's metamorphosis—can lead to a revision of our automatisms, generating immense discomfort, but also offering the opportunity to appropriate and expand our ways of being.
